Corvette Racing Reigns in American Le Mans Series Monterey with One-Two Finish

Written By: warnett17 - May• 14•12

Gavin and Milner Score Consecutive GT Victories; Magnussen and Garcia Take Second in Six-Hour Race

MONTEREY, Calif.- Corvette Racing broke its victory drought at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in convincing fashion today, sweeping the fiercely competitive GT class with a one-two finish in the six-hour American Le Mans Series Monterey. It was the team’s first victory at the central California circuit since a win in the GT1 class in 2008, and its first one-two finish since moving to the GT class in 2009.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner scored their second straight victory in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R by a 3.45-second margin over their teammates Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the sister No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R. The winning Corvette drivers completed 232 laps after rebounding from a troubled pit stop that dropped them to seventh place at the midpoint of the race.

Today’s win was the 36th career ALMS victory for Gavin, and the second for Milner after the pair won one month ago in the streets of Long Beach. The victory vaulted Gavin and Milner into first place in the GT driver standings and gave Chevrolet the lead in the manufacturers championship after three of 10 rounds.

Corvette Racing has now notched 83 class wins and 55 one-two finishes.

“We had a lot of ups and downs today, but ended up with a great result,” Gavin said. “The Corvette C6.R car was spectacular and Corvette Racing did a brilliant job. We were all the way back to seventh at one point, so it took great pit stops and a fantastic setup to pull us back to first.”

“It was just a crazy day, and winning feels really good,” Milner said. “Our Corvette was phenomenal. We had one hiccup in pit lane, but this Corvette Racing team never gives up. We fought back and Oliver did an amazing job in his final stint. Just a great day for Corvette Racing!”

Gavin made the winning pass with one hour to go, taking the lead from Porsche driver Wolf Henzler. “I knew that he was strong and I needed to get it done and make it stick as soon as possible,” Gavin reported. “I got just enough inside of him and he gave me just enough road. We had a bit of a rub in the last turn; Wolf’s hard but fair.”

Magnussen put on a show in the final hour, moving from fifth to second with a series of power plays. The Dane passed a Porsche and a BMW in a single move on the front straight to take second, but subsequently lost the position to the No. 55 BMW. With 15 minutes to go, Magnussen regained the runner-up spot by following a prototype through on the inside line in the Andretti Hairpin.

“I knew it was an opportunity for something to happen,” Magnussen said. “The BMW got a little sideways, and I could see the P-car starting to pass on the inside. I was going to try to follow the P2, but he braked early and took all the air off my front end. I locked up the front brakes and kind of pushed him past the BMW.”

Antonio Garcia drove the middle stint in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R, taking the lead shortly before the four-hour mark. “It was a very hard race, which is why GT racing in ALMS is the best in the world,” Garcia said. “A six-hour race and in the end it comes down to hundredths of a second. I’m very happy for Corvette for its first one-two of the season. We were very solid all the way through, and we just need to keep digging. The next stop is Le Mans, and that is where we need to do another one-two!”

Today’s victory at Laguna Seca marked a change of fortune for Corvette Racing, which has struggled at times to come to grips with the roller-coaster 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit.

“Last year, Laguna was probably our toughest event,” noted Engineering Director Doug Louth. “Our cars have changed a great deal from 2011, but the biggest difference this weekend was the 2012 Michelin tires and the work that engineers Chuck Houghton and Kyle Millay did to arrive at the baseline setup for this event. This is always a difficult track to keep a handle on through changing conditions, and any year that you have good cars every session and throughout the race is remarkable.”

Corvette Racing’s focus now shifts to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the crown jewel of endurance racing.

“We have a long month of June coming up, and Le Mans is a very different beast,” Milner observed. “I’m looking forward to going back and driving down the Mulsanne Straight.”

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Test Day in Le Mans, France, on June 3, followed by the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16-17.

President Obama gives the Volt a test drive and thumbs up

Written By: Pat Hayes - Mar• 03•12

President Obama gives the Volt a test drive on the assembly line in Detroit. A vote of confidence and thumbs up.

Check out all the details here from pbs.

It might go down as the shortest joyride in history.

President Obama got behind the wheel of a black Chevrolet Volt, GM’s new electric car, and drove it a distance of about 10 feet, topping out at at a few miles per hour.

Mr. Obama was invited to test drive the battery-powered car while touring a General Motors plant outside Detroit Friday.

He buckled himself in only after consulting with Secret Service and top aides, including White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who remarked, “I hope it has an airbag.”

Upon exiting the vehicle, the president deemed the ride “pretty smooth.”

Mr. Obama also visited a nearby Chrysler plant earlier in the day, but did not take any vehicles out for a spin. The president was in Michigan to tout the progress made in the U.S. auto industry since last year, when the federal government pumped $60 billion into GM and Chrysler and forced both companies into bankruptcy.

On Friday’s NewsHour, we’ll have a closer look at the state of the U.S. auto industry and manufacturing.

To Follow up on my Previous Article on Gesture control in cars

So to follow up on my previous article written on how apple and steve jobs would affect the future of automobiles. As CES has continued this past week demonstrating all the newest and latest technologies out there, a sample of what could be has been delivered by Audi. Catch a glimpse here courtesy of engadget and autoblog. Take a look at the new Audi HUD with Gesture control.

Gestures and Voice Control in your car – where will APPLE and STEVE JOBS go next

Written By: Pat Hayes - Jan• 10•12

Apple in your Car - it's just around the corner

While everyone in the world knows that STEVE JOBS is not with us physically anymore, his influences and inventions will continue to be so for a long time.  Consider this week, as the CES 2012 is underway in Las Vegas. One of the main topics of discussion is that which revolves around TVs and particularly what Apple and Cupertino, CA have up their sleeve. Many are guessing and wondering what is next in the world of this technology giant. You can read up on the juicy details here as CES begins. Steve Jobs said a while back that he’d solved the TV problem. We’ve already seen some of these samples at work with the delivery of Siri in the new Iphone 4S. Bringing voice recognition to the masses at high speeds and in real world environments is done brilliantly through the delivery of the one device you rarely leave home without. What would American Express have said 30 years ago if you’d have told them that in the future, their plastic card was going to be replace by a smartphone that could do all of that and millions of things more.  I believe this is Apple’s test into the voice recognition market. Definitely a fantastic way to gather real world facts about how the technology works. Fast forward to the iTV, as it is rumoured, would potentially combine this hopefully fine tuned technology with that of hand gestures, apps, and all that APPLE has to offer. And it’s got the whole TV industry in uproar. You can already see how the gesture technology works if you’ve experienced Microsoft’s XBox 360 with it’s kinect device. My kids love this stuff. Initially designed to allow kids to place games and recognize dance moves, etc., imagine the scope of usability with hand gestures. Combine that with Siri powered technology and you could begin to imagine what an iTV from Apple might be able to do. Don’t forget the millions of apps Apple has already under their belt.

Forward a few years and now you can picture yourself driving a brand new Chevrolet Camaro, listening to all your entertainment and information needs using Voice and Hand Gestures, changing climate controls, vehicles systems, settings, seat controls, and many other vehicle controls. The world as we know it is changing. All those amazing things we’ve been experiencing with our smartphones and the availability of technology and information at our fingertips…. consider the power that is about to lie in the gesture of your hand or tone of your voice!

All new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Written By: Pat Hayes - Jan• 09•12

Chevrolet does it again with the new ZL1. Below are specs and details of the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at Marc Heitz Chevrolet. Our first is due to arrive in weeks. Please check out more details on the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 by viewing the videos on our Camaro ZL1 website.

Camaro ZL1 by the Numbers: 3.9 Seconds, 184
mph, $54,995

DETROIT – The 2012
Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and can
reach a top speed of 184 mph. Starting at $54,995, including Performance
Traction Management and Magnetic Ride suspension, the ZL1 delivers supercar
levels of performance and technology for the price of a sports car.

“From the original Camaro to the current
Corvette ZR1, Chevrolet has a long history of delivering world-class cars that
outperformed competitors at several times the price,” said Chris Perry, vice
president, Global Chevrolet Marketing. “The ZL1 is no exception. There are very
few cars at any price that can match the power, features, and track-capability
of the Camaro ZL1.”

For the $54,995 price, including a $900
delivery fee, the ZL1 compares favorably to much more expensive cars:

Base price Horsepower Torque Magnetic Ride
Camaro ZL1 $54,995 580 556 Standard
Audi R8 GT $196,800 560 398 Standard
Maserati GranTurismo $122,800 405 339 Not available
Mercedes SLS AMG $185,750 565 479 Not available

Supercar Performance

The heart of the Camaro ZL1 is a supercharged
6.2L engine is SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque
(754 Nm) – making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever.

The LSA features a Roots-style blower with an
efficient four-lobe rotor set and compact intercooler The ZL1 also features a
standard dual-mode exhaust system, with vacuum-actuated valves in the exhaust
pipes for a refined exhaust note at low speeds as well as a free-flowing system
for peak performance.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through
either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With either transmission,
the Camaro ZL1 delivers impressive performance:

Manual Automatic
0 – 60 mph (from rolling start) 4.0 seconds 3.9 seconds
1/4-mile (from a rolling start) 12.1 sec at 119 mph 12.0 sec at 119 mph
Top speed 180 mph 184 mph
Max lateral grip 1.0 g 1.0 g

“With 0 to 60 taking less than four seconds,
and a top speed in excess of 180 mph, the power and acceleration of the Camaro
ZL1 rivals many supercars,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “And,
horsepower is only half of the story, as the most significant measurement of the
ZL1’s potential is lapping the Nurburgring in 7:41.27. That is a great
testament to the power, braking, grip, and balance of the Camaro ZL1, and to
the well-rounded performance of the ZL1 that sets the bar for the sports-car
segment.”

Exclusive,
track-capable technologies

To
deliver that well-rounded performance, the Camaro ZL1 comes standard with
several track-capable technologies that are exclusive to the segment.

For
example, the Camaro ZL1 is the first sports car to feature the third-generation
of Magnetic Ride. This advanced suspension system employs valve-less damping
and Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid technology to varies the suspension firmness
to match the road and driving conditions.

“Traditional
suspension systems at some point compromise ride quality for road-holding grip
and body control,” said Oppenheiser. “With Magnetic Ride Control, we can offer
customers the best of both worlds: A comfortable ride that makes the ZL1
appropriate as a daily driver and the incredibly precise body control that
makes the ZL1 so enjoyable on the track.”

Also
standard on the Camaro ZL1 is Performance Traction Management, which integrates
magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control, electronic stability
control and electric power steering response to enhance performance.  The technology was first introduced on the
Corvette ZR1. With Performance Traction Management, the launch control feature
(manual transmission only) automatically modulates engine torque for the best-possible
acceleration without excessive wheel spin. When the driver pushes the throttle
to the floor, the system holds a predetermined engine speed until the driver
releases the clutch. Then, the system modulates engine torque 1,000 times per
second to maximize the available traction. Similarly, on a road course, the
driver can apply full throttle when exiting a corner and Performance Traction
Management will automatically manage acceleration dynamics to maximize exit
speed based on available traction.

In
addition, the Camaro ZL1 has been engineered to be track-capable from the
factory, including a rear-differential cooler, an integrated engine- and
transmission-oil cooler, and brake-cooling ducts as standard equipment. As
such, the ZL1 offers many technologies and features not available on the 2012 Ford
Shelby GT500:

Bluetooth connectivity; and rear-park assist with a rear-view camera display
integrated in the center rear-view mirror.

2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette is all about racing history

New Centennial Edition 2012 Corvette Z06 at Marc Heitz!

New Centennial Edition 2012 Corvette Z06 at Marc Heitz!

By Aaron Richardson, Autoblog.com

Chevrolet is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a fitting tribute to racing driver turned entrepreneur, Louis Chevrolet. The brand’s founding father raced in four Indianapolis 500s from 1915 to 1919, and though he never managed a victory, his motorsports expertise helped guide his car company from the outset.

In observance, the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette gets a special coat of “Carbon Flash” black paint and carries logos on the B-pillars with the number 100 and a likeness of Mr. Chevrolet himself. Inside, there’s plenty of Alcantara and contrasting red stitching to set off additional black trim, and the headrests are embossed with the same 100th anniversary logo as the B-pillars.

Outside, the Centennial Edition gets special 18 or 19-inch for the Grand Sport and standard Corvette and 19 or 20-inch rollers for the ZR-1 and Z06.

The Centennial Edition package is available on every Corvette model they sell, meaning you can get your Z06, ZR-1 or Grand Sport gussied up just the same as your standard coupe or convertible. All of the cars with the 100th anniversary package receive red painted brake calipers and Corvette’s optional (and excellent) magnetically adjustable suspension.

Corvette’s Mark in the History of Racing, Part 2: “Rondine.”

Written By: warnett17 - Aug• 26•11
1963 Pininfarina Corvette Coupe "Rondine"

1963 Pininfarina Corvette Coupe "Rondine"

In 1963, GM sent a very early Corvette C3 chassis to Pininfarina to receive special coachwork. Although many cars were already using monocoque construction, the Corvette was still available as a bare chassis, a blank canvas for Pininfarina on which to work. Beyond that, its classic sports car layout and relatively short wheelbase were an excellent foundation for an exciting, clean-sheet design. The early 1960s at Pininfarina was an era that produced some of the company’s finest designs, and after they had worked their magic on so many front-engine Ferraris, the Corvette offered the firm the perfect opportunity to create “an American proposal with European flavor.” The chassis that GM shipped over was a top-of-the-line 360 hp “Fuelie” with four-speed, power brakes, AM/FM radio and defroster.

Young Tom Tjaarda, a Dutch designer who had grown up in Detroit, spearheaded the design. After being trained as an architect at the University of Michigan, Tjaarda went to work for Ghia in 1958 at the age of 24. Two years later, his fine eye for design landed him a job at Pininfarina. Throughout the next decade, Tjaarda was at the forefront of automotive design, and his portfolio includes the De Tomaso Pantera, Ferrari’s 365 California Spider and Series I 330 GT, Fiat’s 124 and an impressive array of one-off show cars and design studies. His designs exhibit the successful integration of various interests of his day – an emphasis on clean planar lines, elegant proportions and effective usage of minimal brightwork – all evidencing a deep understanding of automotive form that anticipated the direction of subsequent automotive design. He was the perfect candidate to produce a European Corvette. (more…)
